BIZ JARGON NUMBS MODERN BRAINS— —“We are proactively transforming our business to a member-centric integrated retailer. We are transitioning from a business that has historically focused on running a store network to one delivering value by serving its members in the manner most convenient for them: whether in store, in home or through digital devices.” The words of Sears boss Eddie Lampert whose in store retail strategy has been a disaster to Sears Holdings’ shareholders. Isn’t it about time corporate biz speak using words/phrases like ‘paradigm’, ‘transparent’,’ member-centric integrated’ is replaced by easy-to-understand truthful talk. For example: “ Our in store retail strategy hasn’t worked despite numerous overhauls. We think our success will be found in Sears membership programs” etc.etc.

DUMB-DE-DUMB-DUMB—In the “David vs. Goliath” biblical  story, you don’t want to be big guy in business. A Pizza Hut franchise owner in Elkhart, IN ordered his staff to work this Thanksgiving Day. The manager refused. He was fired. He wrote a note telling why the biz should be closed. Local TV, print, radio picked up on it. Then it spread globally in less time than it takes to reopen a Pizza Hut. Corporate Pizza Hut was upset at what happened and recommended the “Turkey Scrooge” franchisee reinstate the store manager. It makes lots of $ense to think about Goliath decisions that have a public-led David result.

EVITER LE WEST SIDE ET LE SUD APRES LA 59 RUE—Always interesting to watch the truth intersect political correctness these days. The French Consulate in Chicago has warned tourists to avoid the West Side and South Side below 59th St. Mayor Emanuel was about to firmly plant his foot in his mouth when, obviously, one of his sage PR advisors suggested he bite his tongue and keep quiet. Emanuel likes to be perceived as a tough guy so it was interesting to see him fall back unspoken. Maybe, in part, because the city’s own tourism guide reflects the consulate advisory. The truth may sting a lot more than PC but it will “set you free”.
